| Re: New RULE for DS2019 arrangement
The Department of State has published regulations
establishing a new Internship program and revitalizing the Training
Program.
The regulations will
go into effect July 19, 2007. The new regulations
allow the Department of State to closely monitor the quality and
compliance of exchange programs while simultaneously expanding the program
to a larger audience of participants. The
regulations outline the long expected Internship program and make
significant alterations to the existing Training Program. The aim of the program continues to be for students
and young professionals to gain exposure to US culture and business
practices and ultimately take those skills and knowledge back to their
home countries to share with their peers and further their careers.
We have summarized the main points from the
regulations and have outlined both the training program and internship
programs below: Training
Program Internship Program
Participant
Definitions Graduates of degree or
certificate granting post secondary institution with one year of work
experience outside the U.S. OR Non-graduates with five years
of work experience outside the US. Current students enrolled
in a degree or certificate granting post secondary institution outside of
the U.S. OR Recent graduates from a degree or certificate granting post
secondary institution who will begin the program within 12 months of
graduation.
Program
Definitions Up to 18 month program that
provides practical experience in US business methodologies for candidates
with experience in the field from their home country. Hospitality and
Tourism programs have been reduced to 12 month programs from the current
18 months. 12 month program that
provides work-based experience for students that reinforces their academic
studies.
